Concern for Adventists in ferry disaster
At least five Adventists are believed to have been passengers on a ferry that sank during its journey between Lae and Kimbe in Papua New Guinea.
So far 238 survivors have been rescued after the MV Rabaul Queen sank near Finschaffen en route from Lae to Kimbe.
But rough seas and strong winds have frustrated attempts to take the survivors to Lae for medical treatment.
Authorities believe there were about 350 passengers on board.
Dr Leigh Rice, the president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Papua New Guinea, said that “nothing is confirmed as yet” but that he believed two people connected with the Morobe Mission were on the ferry as well as three people from the Bouganville Mission. As around ten per cent of PNG citizens identify as Seventh-day Adventists, there are likely to be more church members involved.
The passengers were PNG locals, mainly students with Lae, the ship's final destination, home to a large university.
