Prison ministry expands in SNZ

Christchurch, New Zealand
Southern Connexions

Prison ministry in South New Zealand is growing, according to Jim Stokes, pastoral volunteer for Adventist prison ministries for the region. The ministry has grown from "small beginnings," with half-hour meetings once per month to a regular 9.30 to 11 am timeslot on Sundays at the Kia Marama unit, Rolleston.

A group of volunteers share the Word of God with a regular group of inmates through a non-denominational service. They also take copies of the Sabbath school lesson, RECORD and Signs of the Times with them. The services feature hymns, Bible study, discussions and prayer.

Mr Stokes says, "When the inmates pray, they pray from the heart-it is a really humbling experience just to listen."

The volunteers are also involved at the main men's prison.
