Tasmania holds first "Women and the Word" conference
Hobart, Tasmania

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Tasmania organised its first "Women and the Word" conference in July.
"I have attended ‘Women and the Word' conferences in Sydney and found them to be very empowering and encouraging," says Vicki Knight, women's ministries director for the Adventist Church in Tasmania. "I wanted women and men to come together from all walks of life to be united in Christ, to reach out to community members and invite them to the conference."
Around 100 women and 10 men attended the conference themed "Open arms." According to Ms Knight, this theme "typifies the open arms and acceptance of Jesus for all people."
Guest speakers for the conference included Raquel Arrais, associate director for women's ministries of the Adventist world church; Erna Johnson, director for women's ministries of the South Pacific; and Pastor Robert Granger, director for Adventist Health Ministries for the Adventist Church in Tasmania.
"Women and the Word" conferences have been held annually since 2005 in Sydney, and deal with issues including stereotype and social justice. Ms Knight says there are plans for the Tasmanian conferences to be held annually, too.
